It’s quite likely that you know, or have heard about someone in the office or down the street who has been the victim of identity theft. Most recently news headlines revealed that hackers had stolen information from the Sony Playstation servers demonstrating the need to be safe on the web. Whether you are using a trusted service provider like wildblue, experienced hackers can still find loopholes if we are not careful.

So, how can we protect ourselves from identity theft? Below are three quick tips which you could implement today for safer shopping and gaming on the internet.

Only use trusted websites. Try not to be mesmerised by the colorful pop up leading you to a chance to win a million. Chances are you will be led to either an unsafe site or a competition that isn’t quite genuine. Remember that the smile of a luminous flashing smiley icon may be a cover for something else.
Have a seperate credit card for internet subscriptions and purchases. Its safe not to use a credit card which is linked to other bank accounts. Its also a good way to actually see how much you are spending each month!
Information is power. Think about any personal information you are asked to give out. Your bank for example will never ask for personal account information over the internet. If in doubt, call!

All computer viruses were designed to be malicious in purpose – or were they? Many people erroneously assume that they were. The truth is, there are many reasons that viruses are create. It is important to remember that, whatever the purpose, all viruses will impact the performance of your computer hardware and software.

While it is true that many viruses are designed with malicious intent, there are some whose sole purpose is to propagate itself. The intent is simply to spread to as many computers as possible. These typically are delivered via email or instant message and can spread like wildfire. In spite of the fact that viruses like these do not set out to hard a users computer, they do impact performance speed and other areas of the computer.

Malicious viruses serve a variety of purposes, from providing the original author with extra computing power to stealing identification information. Some are even designed to attack other computers for no other reason than to prove it can be done.

It is apparent that all users must implement a solid anti-virus program. Doing so is the only way to fully protect yourself from viruses – whatever their intent. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter why a virus is developed – instead all that really counts is how actively a user seeks to prevent their spread.

One of the most difficult things to accept about owning a computer is how quickly both hardware and software can become outdated. Choosing an Internet Service Provider isn’t that difficult if you base it on a few guidelines. These guidelines include service, price and dependability. While you can’t always predict how good a company will perform, you can get references from others that will let you make a more informed decision.

For instance, if you have two Internet Service Providers in your area (these are typically cable companies) you can ask your friends, family and neighbors how they feel about their service so that you can get the best service once you make a decision. Points to ask about are: how does the service work and how reliable is it? Is there much downtime and how is customer service one you have an issue? Different areas can experience different issues so it’s good to ask people that live in your neighborhood if possible.

Find out about specials and overall costs once the specials are over with. Sometimes the price can be very low at first and then go much higher after a special has been exhausted. This is something to consider in case you sign a contract to stay with a company for a certain amount of time. While you typically don’t have to stay with a company for Internet service it’s still a good idea to find out just in case there is a contract to sign that pinpoints a specific time period you have to remain a customer.

Your Internet service is very important, especially if you work at home. If you do, you might want to keep that knowledge to yourself since some Internet providers will insist that you take their business plan, which costs more. This doesn’t always happen and some providers could care less but it does happen and you don’t want to have to pay more just because you write articles or sell on eBay.

Another common mistake that many Internet users do is to give out too much personal information. Spammer’s are constantly trying to get your information, but never fall for something that sounds too good to be true. If you receive emails that state you have won a million dollars for a contest you have never entered, you can be sure that this is some type of Internet scam that is simply trying to get a hold of things such as your credit card number, phone number or even social security number. Never disclose banking information or your birth date. If you want to purchase something on the Internet, make sure that the site is secure. Most safe sites have an active security certificate. Avoid sites that do not show this to be the case.
