Common Computer Issues You Can Fix Yourself

Power Outage Safety

A major concern for computer users and businesses with computers in places where inclement weather is common or happens often is power outages. Power outages are problematic in three ways: your computer shuts down instantly; possible data loss not only of whatever you had open at the time, but other files on the hard drive which may have been in the process of being written in the background which can cause your computer to have problems booting back up, or to not boot up at all; and lastly, component failure upon restoration of power due to the surge that happens. The latter two are the biggest worry a computer user has. Luckily there is a way to alleviate these issues. They are called a UPS, or Uninterruptible Power Supply.

Uninterruptible Power Supplies come in different capacities and abilities. Most UPS at the least do four things: condition the line power by inverting it to DC and then inverting it again back to a steady 60Hz AC, provide surge protection, charge a battery to allow the continued powering of the PC and components on AC to allow for a safe shutdown (or continued use) during an outage, and to initiate a safe shutdown of the computer.

It is possible to buy a more robust UPS that can allow for continued use of a PC and its components up to a certain wattage draw for an hour or more if need be. In the case of a power outage, the UPS detects loss of incoming AC power and continues providing power via its built in battery. It also sends a command to the installed management software to begin saving open documents (if there are any), closing all open applications, and shutting the PC down properly so that no data is lost. The surge protection part of the UPS protects the PC and components from the surge of current that occurs when power is restored.

The Computer is a Kid’s Best Friend

Whatever happened to hanging out at your friend’s house? Seems that these days, the computer is a kid’s best friend. It used to be kids were on the phone all night. Now it’s the computer.
